How to Prepare Children for a Photography Session | Lima Ohio Photographer

Have Trust in Me

First things first, have trust in me. We will get plenty of lovely images of your family, I promise. I have two little girls at home, and I have been photographing families over 5 years now. I realize that children can be playful, silly, and unpredictable, but I am the constant that is prepared for that. Here are some way you can help prepare your children for the shoot.

Fed, Rested, + Hydrated

I do not know about you, but if I am hungry, thirsty, or tired, I may get a little grumpy. Whether it is a meal or a snack, be sure to eat before the session. If the child is already dressed in their photoshoot outfit, consider dry non-messy snacks and water to keep the mess to a minimum. As for naps, try your best to ensure your little ones gets a nap that day (if they still take one). If they have a nap routine that interferes with your session, we can always schedule your session around their naps as well.

Have the Session Be the Main Event

Have the session be the main event of the day, meaning, try not to overbook the day before the session. The more there is going on in the day, the more a child has to be on their best behavior. Eventually, they may not be able to hold it together anymore. (I know this from experience with my own kids.) Just keep the day blocked off as a “family day” and soak in each other’s company, at least until the session is over.

Let Them Be Themselves

We all know that goofy face our kids make when we tell them to “smile” or “say cheese.” We do not want that. I want their genuine expressions to be captured whether that be a pensive and curious gaze or a giant toothy grin. Even if they are tired or moody that day, that is okay too! A mother comforting and holding her child is real life. It is a picture that you will love to have. Let them come as they are.

Tell Them Who I Am + What We Will Be Doing

Show them a picture of me from my website and tell them a friend will be taking pictures of the family. Tell them where we will be and that it is going to be fun! To get them even more excited, maybe go through some pictures WITH them that are OF them. They will love this!

Comfortable Clothing

Kids won’t be happy if they do not like what they are wearing. If it is itchy, doesn’t fit, or is just uncomfortable, they will be uncomfortable. Consider trying on the outfit before the session day to ensure they are happy to wear it. You could also give them choices between two options to give them some autonomy over the decision.
